Slovenia as a research and development centre for global technology companies

June 19, 2024
In recent years, Slovenia has become a real research and development center for global technology companies listed on the NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), two of the world's largest and most recognized stock exchanges.

Among the technology companies listed on the aforementioned exchanges, there are also some that have key research and development centers right in Slovenia: Sportradar (Klika), Outbrain (Zemanta), Bragg Gaming Group (Oryx Gaming), Planet Labs (Sinergise), SAP (Cleanshelf — LeanIX) and the latest announcement by Robinhood (Bitstamp).

In the last decade, some of the biggest players in the field of technology have recognized the potential of Slovenian technology companies, which has led to several strategic acquisitions. In many cases, after the takeover, due to high-quality engineering potential, knowledge and experience, a development and research center was established in Slovenia, which generally led to faster growth of the acquired Slovenian companies, while maintaining high added value.

Key advantages of such research and development centres in Slovenia

Acquisition of Slovenian technology companies by globally successful companies listed on
American stock exchanges and establishing important research and development centers in Slovenia
Beneficial benefits for Slovenia, including:

  • More quality jobs: Research and development centres have created many high-quality jobs, attract top talent and provide excellent career opportunities for local professionals, not only in the technical or natural fields, but also in the areas of management, recruitment and employee development. These six companies create more than 800 high-quality jobs in Slovenia today (data from publicly available annual reports).
  • Economic growth: The presence of international technology companies stimulates the local economy through greater investment, better or above average paid jobs and, consequently, higher consumption.
  • Innovation and technology transfer: The integration of global and local professionals encourages innovation, leading to the development of new advanced technologies and the emergence of new technology companies.
  • Global visibility: Slovenia is gaining international recognition as a centre for high-tech research and development, which improves its reputation and attracts further foreign direct investment.

Workforce Competence Development: Working with global companies gives local professionals access to advanced training and development opportunities, improving their skills and knowledge, as well as opening up new opportunities for advancement.

Considering all the benefits, it is right that we are in high expectation of the next acquisition of this kind, and at the same time we are trying to position Slovenia even more actively as an important development, innovative, technological center with high-quality engineering and other personnel.

At the same time, we must not forget the companies that have grown into the world from Slovenia, opened branches and sales centers around the world, and maintained a research and development function in Slovenia (more on this in one of the upcoming articles).

Missed opportunities are difficult to make up for, so let's encourage bold steps, future champions, real heroes on the domestic and global field!
