What is Koofr

Koofr is a secure and reliable service for storing and sharing files in the cloud - from photos and videos, sensitive private and business documents to huge databases. Files in cloud storage are protected against loss and at the same time accessible via the web or phone anywhere and anytime.

You can update files directly in your browser or share them with others — even if they don't have a Koofr account. You can link your Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive accounts to your Koofr account and manage the files on them directly within Koofr.

Do you use Instagram or Facebook? Also, the photos you have there can be easily transferred to Koofr and avoid possible loss.

Each Koofra user receives 10GB of free space. As space requirements increase, upgrade it easily and quickly.

In addition to cloud storage, our digital solutions also include automation and management of large amounts of data, as well as information technology and cybersecurity services. Our B2B clients include telecommunications service providers in Slovenia, Romania, Serbia, Italy, Spain, Macedonia, Montenegro, Belgium, Portugal and Croatia, government departments, public authorities, companies in the infrastructure, healthcare, information technology and medical sectors.

Formation

The idea for Koofr was born in 2012. The product was launched on the market a year later and won the Slovenian Start:Up of the Year award in the same year. We acquired our first customers in the B2B market. We have established international partnerships with Internet service providers and telecommunications companies around the world.

Mission and Vision

In 2014, we noticed a shortage of truly private cloud storage in the market. We have decided to offer users the best possible product, while keeping only as much of their personal data as is strictly necessary to provide our service with high quality. In doing so, we put their privacy at the very top of our values. Unlike other cloud storages, we do not use tracking, cookies and ads, we do not sell our users' personal information to third parties, and we do not use it to learn artificial intelligence.

TODAY'S TIMES AND CHALLENGES

We are not short of ideas and projects for the development of Koofra. Our goal is that the functionalities and updates are perfectly implemented, that they bring a real advantage to the users and that they are aligned with the development vision of the company. In 2024, we presented users with a completely renewed Koofr app for Android. Before that, we focused on the 'zero-knowledge' solution: in 2022 we introduced the brand new, open-source service Koofr Vault, followed a year later by the launch of a mobile application.

The company is fully owned by employees who prioritize long-term stability over short-term profits, which is reflected both in daily work and in long-term business planning. Koofr employs 10 people in Slovenia, employing as many women as men — a ratio that is rather the exception than the rule for computer companies.

A small team means more authentic relationships between colleagues. This connectivity is reflected in effective communication, which allows us to react quickly and adapt to the needs of users. We nurture bonds between employees even outside of working hours: we often start and end the working week with informal gatherings, and we also strengthen them with memorable annual events (teambuilding). With this year, we also made sure to support a healthy lifestyle and offered employees healthy snacks in addition to drinks.

At the very beginning of our journey, we committed ourselves to collecting the minimum amount of user data possible. This commitment is reflected through the offer and communication of the company. In addition to the product, which guarantees complete privacy regardless of the size of the package, we also offer various services in the field of cybersecurity, and in our communication with users we continuously educate on various aspects of online security.

In 2022, we started working with SRC-EDIH, the European Digital Innovation Hub. As a partner in the project, we offer free training in the field of cybersecurity and penetration tests.

In contrast to many competing technology companies, we opted for a more difficult business route from the very beginning. Our income comes exclusively from paying users, with no additional funding from venture capital. This allows us to remain independent and user-focused when making decisions. Our autonomy means that we can honestly follow our values without having to compromise. The company is wholly owned by employees who prioritize long-term stability over short-term profits. This ensures that we will be present in the market for a long time.

In 12 years of existence, we have raised annual revenues of over 600 thousand euros and have just under one million active users in more than 150 countries. Our plans for the future include new cloud storage functionalities and continued growth of the company, and we also see an opportunity in the development of cybersecurity services. We want to grow gradually and at the same time maintain self-sufficiency. Data and information privacy is the foundation on which we have been building for many years. We believe that our users have the right to a widely usable product that respects their privacy.

Durability

Data centers are proverbially energy-intensive facilities that require enormous amounts of energy to operate. However, recent research shows that hyperscale data centers are much more efficient and environmentally friendly compared to traditional local data centers.

Our servers are located in data centers in Germany, EU. These data centers are powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including wind and hydropower. They only use air to cool the servers, thus not increasing water consumption. In addition, Koofr promotes efficient data storage with duplicate search and storage optimization tools, allowing users to keep only the files they really need.

Collaboration with our data center is part of Koofr's contribution to a sustainable digital ecosystem. Our partner's commitment to renewable energy aligns with our goals to reduce the company's carbon footprint.

The biggest challenges for cloud storage providers will be competing with dominant competitors in the market and resisting privacy pressures. We expect the market to split between private storage with client-side encryption and conventional services used for data mining. The deployment of AI will bring new capabilities for organization and productivity, while it will be imperative to develop security measures to protect against data leaks. A key challenge remains to ensure high security for less tech-savvy users while at the same time being easy to use the service.
